Prince Albert II of Monaco has committed Himself and His Foundation to protect bluefin tuna from extinction. To this extent, the Principality of Monaco had proposed to include this kind of high value tuna trade in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) to ban international trade and to protect the population affected by overfishing.

The 175-nation Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, or CITES, met in Doha (Qatar) and on March 18, 2010, the vote was 68 countries against a ban, 20 in favor and 30 abstaining.

A statement of H.S.H. Prince Albert II after the vote :

Prince Albert II of Monaco regrets that the Monegasque proposal to suspend exports of Atlantic and Mediterranean bluefin tuna has been rejected.

Despite this rejection, He notes that the commitments underscore the concern of the signatories on the status of bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean and that this particular concern is shared by the EU and the U.S.. He hopes that the debate has increased the international community and people awareness on the urgency of preserving this species.

He will closely follow the next steps of the implementation of the measures stated in Doha.
